Reclast IV Infusion

WHAT IS IT?
Reclast is an infusion approved for the treatment of osteoporosis (weak bones). Your bones are made of living tissue and are always changing. New bone is formed replacing old bone to keep your body strong. When you have osteoporosis old bones break down faster than new bone can form. One dose of Reclast helps protect your bones for one year. With Reclast, a single yearly I.V. infusion along with daily calcium and vitamin D helps increase bone density, protecting and strengthening your bones.

BEFORE YOUR TREATMENT
Your healthcare provider may order a blood test to check your kidney function to make sure Reclast is right for you.

A nurse will call you to set up an appointment for your Reclast infusion.

YOU WILL NEED TO LET THE NURSE KNOW IF YOU HAVE HAD ANY RECENT DENTAL PROCEDURES SUC AS PULLED TEETH, ROOT CANAL, ETC. YOUR INFUSION MAY NEED TO BE POSTPONED IF YOU HAVE HAD DENTAL WORK RECENTLY.

THE DAY OF YOUR TREATMENT

You should eat normally before your treatment. You must drink 2 eight oz. glasses of water a few hours prior to receiving the infusion of Reclast.

Reclast will be administered by inserting a small needle into the vein.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER THE TREATMENT
After you receive Reclast you can resume your normal activities.

After receiving Reclast you must take 1200mg of Calcium and 800 Units of Vitamin D daily. If you cannot take calcium or Vitamin D for some reason then you CANNOT receive Reclast.

The most common side effects include flu-like symptoms, fever, muscle/joint pain or headaches. Most will occur in the first few days following the treatment. A mild pain reliever like ibuprofen or Tylenol may reduce these symptoms.
